Aleksandar Timotic is an acclaimed countertenor and performing artist, recognized for his distinctive alto-toned voice and versatility across repertoire ranging from Baroque masterpieces to contemporary works. He is a graduate of the renowned Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where he studied with Professor Martin Wölfel and laid the foundation for an international operatic career. Born in Niš, Serbia, Timotić began his musical education studying violin and solo singing. After being twice denied admission to the local music academy, he continued his studies abroad in Luhansk, Ukraine, under the guidance of coloratura soprano Julietta Yakubovych. This decisive period led swiftly to his professional debut in Martin Palmeri’s Misa a Buenos Aires, performed with the Belgorod Philharmonic. Following his move to Germany, his career developed rapidly. At Folkwang University, he performed Oberon in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His Baroque debut followed at Theater Lübeck as Alessandro in Handel’s Tolomeo, and he later appeared at the Bavarian State Opera in Shostakovich’s The Nose. More recently, he debuted at Kassel State Opera as Trinculo in Thomas Adès’ The Tempest, and will return to Oberon at Theater Münster. Alongside opera, Timotić is actively engaged in performance art. Mentored by Marina Abramović, he created Are You Hungry?, a participatory work combining Balkan folk traditions, communal rituals, and live performance. The piece premiered at the Folkwang Museum Essen, appeared at London’s Southbank Centre through the Marina Abramović Institute, and was presented at the Bangkok Biennale. He also contributed to Abramović’s Balkan Erotic Epic.
